Have you experienced this situation watching this clip?
What did we learn from this short clip?
Take the “Winging It” out of your communications – team members will notice.
-
Balance urgency and intensity in measured doses will enhance the message, not overwhelm it.
-
Connect, Convince, Communicate, & Close.
-
Communicating effectively takes preparation, practice, and personality.
What do you currently do to communicate properly with others? If you can communicate a message, really get it across to others, you will be more effective in your role.
What breaks down communications with others? If you don’t like to communicate, or you do not overcome your demons that prevent you from really letting it fly, you will undermine your potential.
When you communicate think SMART:
-
State: who you are, and the purpose of the communication, your main points, and any follow-up action required.
-
Make: the connection with the person, and the importance of the communication, be brief and do not ramble, and close with a “thank you for your time”.
-
Always: ensure you satisfy the reason for the communications, address one or at most two main topics, and avoid adding more information than required.
-
Remember: to plan your communication to save time… “the recipient’s time, not necessarily yours”.
-
Tell: the recipient how to follow-up with you if needed, take the time to listen to the recipient, take the time to prepare. “If you do not prepare, your teammates will know it”.
How will you communicate with your team members?
-
You have an obligation to ask for a commitment from your team members as a result of your communications.
-
If you hit the target correctly the team members will know it and reward you “probably with questions unanswered”.
-
How will you improve communications for your next engagement?
