  • Assuming you know when they are joking, etc.

  • Sarcasm, intonation, other nuances

  • Falls by the wayside when communicated with words on a screen

  • Permanence

  • Age of the Internet

  • Everything is stored somewhere & IT might be watching or has access if needed

  • Could come back to haunt you

  • Regret

  • Ever pressed ‘send/enter’ before you reviewed or completed a thought or statement?

  • In Skype, editing or deleting comments can be necessary or helpful, but can also leave a negative impression on the reader; are you hiding something?

  • Ever responded to someone’s comment or post in a way that later became clear was inappropriate or totally out of context?

TAKE-A-WAYS

  • Always Be Aware

  • Write consciously, remembering that all perceptions are different

  • What you type and what someone else reads may very well be two completely different things

  • Follow up in person as often as possible to maintain interpersonal relationships that can help you understand each other better.
